About ALHSUD
Latin American Association of Groundwater Hydrology for Development
The Latin American Association of Groundwater Hydrology for Development (ALHSUD) is a non-profit civil association which brings together scientists, professionals, technicians, and entities interested in all matters related to groundwater resources in Latin America.
Its origins date back to a meeting of Latin American hydrogeologists in Cochabamba, Bolivia (1987), which aimed to lay the groundwork for the creation of ALHSUD. The association was formally established two years later, during the Second Latin American Conference on Urban Hydrology in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in November 1989, with Dr. Aldo Rebouças serving as its first president.
Since its inception, ALHSUD has established itself as a regional benchmark in promoting technical and scientific knowledge on groundwater resources. Its approach focuses on sustainable development, integrated water management, and cooperation among countries in the region, supporting the formulation of public policies and regulatory frameworks that ensure the access, conservation, and responsible use of groundwater as a strategic asset for the social, economic, and environmental development of Latin American countries.
Objectives:
- Promote research, conservation, and protection of groundwater resources in Latin America and the Caribbean for balanced and rational development.
- Cooperate with governments and planners in appropriately legislating and managing groundwater resources for the benefit of their populations.
- Encourage institutions and companies dedicated to groundwater research and utilization to conduct integrated studies of aquifer characteristics and properties prior to exploitation, as well as to develop and apply efficient technologies for their use and protection.
- Combine efforts and experiences among professionals dedicated to groundwater resources to propose management policies.
- Bring together scientists, technical professionals, and entities interested in the study, research, exploration, prospecting, evaluation, use, technological promotion, conservation, and management of groundwater resources.
- Stimulate the exchange of information and experiences among individuals, institutions, and countries.
- Promote the utilization of human resources through technical-scientific meetings, training courses, and/or joint projects.
- Disseminate Latin American and Caribbean scientific and technological production regarding groundwater internationally; to this end, ALHSUD has published the Latin American Journal of Hydrogeology, with several printed issues and others in electronic format.
- Spread relevant international literature on methods and techniques related to groundwater.
- Boost international and interregional technical and financial cooperation in groundwater programs.
- Study and propose legislation, standards, regulations, technical procedures, and rules related to the use and protection of groundwater to the appropriate agencies.
- Establish technical committees and promote specific meetings for the analysis and discussion of groundwater-related matters.
